Tom Missios

As a young man, Tom grew up in the restaurant business starting as a dishwasher. His passion for restaurants showed from a young age, and he quickly became hooked on the pace, hospitality and multifaceted challenges in the business, while working for various independent full-service restaurants as he completed his education in Business Administration at Humber College.

His passion for restaurants continued after college, as he worked his way into management for a local restaurant and bar O’Toole’s Roadhouse, which is now Sir Corp. Service Inspired Restaurants. Impressed by his dedication and his operations acumen, the owner quickly made him an operating partner. It was in this role, that over the course of four years Tom learned to appreciate the finer points of the business and began to use systems and data to make informed decisions about how to properly steer the business.

Tom then ventured into quick service restaurants as an owner of two Pizza Pizza franchises. He was a successful franchisee for eight years, operating two stores exceeding more than one million dollars in sales per year, while being ranked in the top five restaurants in operations across Canada. Additionally, Tom was instrumental in implementing the “30 Minutes or Free” delivery initiative.

Self-motivated and driven, Tom got back into full service restaurants, but this time as a savvy entrepreneur. He started up a popular local restaurant and sports bar, Whiskey Jack’s Sports Bar & Grill, which was the talk of the town in Richmond Hill. Utilizing his operations expertise and passion for restaurants, he developed Whiskey Jack’s from conception to opening and everything in between and beyond. Tom was the independent owner operator for two successful years, exceeding more than one million dollars in sales per year, while building the business through standards and systems to successfully manage well over 50 employees.

After enjoying success as an owner operator, Tom continued his passion for restaurants but this time in the quick service segment, spending seven years with the international brand Wendy’s/Tim Horton’s. He successfully demonstrated the ability to use systems and controls to formulate and execute profit and loss statements, while meeting and exceeding annual budgets. Tom successfully analyzed financial data from operations in order to get to the root cause of the problem, which increased sales and profit growth.

Utilizing his operational skills to date, Tom began to realize that his true passion was in helping others and joined Quiznos in 2004. At the time, the chain had 150 restaurants and Tom became an integral member of a team that grew to over 400 locations, including opening 100 in a single year. As much as was learned during this rapid growth phase, he learned even more by staying with his franchise partners to assist them to increase restaurant profitability, drawing on years of operations expertise coupled with dedication. As was true with each of his other ventures, the basics of operations planning and monitoring the variables of the business became crucial to his owners’ success or failure.
